The season for Smith River float trips typically starts in early May and ends by the middle of July. Rainbow and brown trout average 13” in length, but much larger ones, from 16” to over 20”, are not uncommon, and due to the Smith’s limited-access permit system, overcrowding is not an issue on this river. The Smith River was given its name by Lewis and Clark in 1805 during their historic expedition to the Pacific from St. Louis.
