Annie and Bill Atchison opened Rio Piedra Plantation twenty years ago and their son, Sam and his wife, Beth have since joined the operation. When asked why their guests return year after year, it’s simple—it’s real hunting. Many consider the 1950-1960s era as having been the peak for bobwhite quail in South Georgia. It’s not. It’s now. Habitat restoration efforts in recent decades have brought the birds back in the Plantation Belt—a narrow strip of land between Albany, GA and Tallahassee. Quail move freely between the vast private plantations here. And there is only one option open to traveling wingshooters—Rio Piedra Plantation. In fact, Rio Piedra is the only Orvis-endorsed lodge located in the Plantation Belt. The hunting here is as it was 50 or 100 years ago. The quail here aren’t merely shot, they are hunted.
