Mongolia is one of the world’s most spectacular fly fishing destinations. This country should be on every angler’s bucket list. But be warned. If you visit Mongolia once, you’ll want to come back again and again.

Here’s a place where the rivers and landscape resemble the American West of years past. The big difference is that Mongolia’s rivers hold giant taimen reaching sixty-inches and Mongolia has a diversity of native trout, grayling, and pike species unknown in the rest of the world.

This country appeals to anglers of all ages and skill levels. Mongolia is not just for the “hard-core”. Getting to Mongolia is now relatively easy. The capital city of Ulaanbaatar is very modern. The outfitter’s camps are extremely comfortable with great meals and lodging. The professional guides row NRS and Clackacraft drift boats. The weather is nearly the same as Montana in the summer and fall.

Taimen are definitely the primary interest. Anglers of all abilities return annually for the challenge and wonder of the mighty taimen. This is the trip for anyone who wants a chance to watch a 50-inch salmonid explode onto your skated mouse. However, taimen are just one part of the story. Mongolia’s native trout and grayling fisheries are fantastic. The variety of fish and fishing conditions is incredible. Many beginning anglers have caught their first trout on a fly in Mongolia and quite a few have hooked into a monster taimen!

More than just an amazing fishing trip, the land of Genghis Khan offers the traveling angler an opportunity to explore a beautiful and intriguing country. In Mongolia, nomads still roam on horseback, rivers are wild and free, and the trout are extremely large.
