It’s always hard to answer why you’re a better choice then another guide or outfitter. Fishing with other skilled anglers and guides has taught me to be open minded about new ways to reach people depending on their personality and fishing expectations. I think that strive for connection with people and making them feel part of the team is why folks fish with me. I am deeply passionate about fishing and I think that becomes contagious and obvious when people are in my presence on the river or a boat in the salt. With a passion for the sport and sharing the experience with others, I feel this sets me apart from the pack. Teaching casting and giving nature lessons is something I am equally enthusiastic about and I think people appreciate the added value especially if fishing is slow or were just taking a break from the action.
I chose the name Greasy Beaks after a fishing trip on the Deschutes in college. I heard someone in our group yell into the tent one morning “Hey boys get up! There’s greasy beaks out there!” After the explanation, that greasy beaks was an expression for trout rising in a river and the foil of water they push off their snouts, the name stuck and I noticed you could say the same for a multitude of fish in different places. It’s always a good omen that when you see greasy beaks on a flat morning the fishing is going to be good.
After my time at the University of Oregon and working for the Mckenzie Angler Fly Shop I spent four seasons guiding in Iliamna, AK. My time here was the catalyst to me becoming a full time fishing guide and one of the greatest experiences I could ever imagine. I knew that if I could take the daily grind for months on end and still want to go fishing at the end of the day (which I always did) I was ready to make this my career. I moved back east for the summer months to launch a salt water fly fishing company and guide service in 2011 so that is where I spend June – September. My Fall, Winter, and Spring are spent out on the Oregon Coast chasing Chinook & Steelhead.
Oregon is my favorite state and a place I’ve called home since my early twenties. My clients fly into PDX and drive out to the coast to fish with me. A typical meeting spot is either Lincoln City or the Tillamook area depending on which rivers give us the best fishing options. This is arguably one of the prettiest places in the world to chase fish with a fly rod and the native fish that frequent these systems are some of the most special.
